Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve De Leon.

Steve, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
At the age of 21, I was fortunate to land a summer job working for a local Real Estate Investment Firm. That summer job turned into a part time job in the fall & spring semesters. I had been going to school with the idea that I would become a Lawyer, however after spending the summer and two semesters working and learning about Real Estate, all that changed for me. I knew then that I wanted to be in the Real Estate business for myself and I never looked back. I continued to work for this firm for a little over two years. During this time I gained some valuable experience in locating and evaluating properties, managing sub-contractors and project timelines and selling off properties to other investor firms and groups. One day one of the partners of the firm came to me and informed me that he and his partner would be dissolving the company and he would like for me to come to work for him at his new firm. Later that same day the other partner came and made me the same offer. I told them both that I would take some time to think about it and would get back to them and let them know my decision. I talked to my wife, Barbara and told her about the two offers. I also told her that I felt it was time for us to go out on our own to build our own business. We decided to make the jump and start our own real estate company so, on March 9th, 1988 at the age of 24 we bought our first investment property. Since then we have purchased and renovated several hundred single and multifamily properties in and around the greater Tarrant County area.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Well, the Real Estate business is just like any other business it has its good and bad times. Fortunately, for our area of the country we’ve seen more good times than bad. You experience a lot of natural ups and downs in 30 years for sure. Real Estate has a cycle just like the Stock Market. The challenge I and other Real Estate Professionals face is staying a head of the curve in either a down or rising market. Real Estate is a risky business, but when you have uncontrollable events like 9/11 or the great recession things can get pretty tight very fast. You see when I started my business the market was on a natural downward scale, making it easier for me to locate and turn properties. When the market began to go on an upswing I learned that I needed to diversify. That’s when we started to buy more rentals and properties we could sell and owner finance. To this day we still flip houses, hold on to rentals and owner finance properties along with our traditional Real Estate and Renovation Services.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about MCM Real Estate Services – what should we know?
MCM Real Estate Services is full service Real Estate & Renovation Company. We are Licensed Texas Realtors and Licensed General Contractors. We have 30 yrs. of experience in buying, renovating and selling properties in the greater Tarrant County area. When we have the opportunity to work with a client that is looking to either buy, sell or renovate its good to know that we have a team of professionals in place that can serve our clients with excellence! There’s a lot of moving parts when buying, selling or renovating a home and our clients take comfort in the fact that we can deliver a high level of service. We recently assisted a client in the purchase of their first home. During the option period their Home Inspector noted some structural issues with the roof, obviously this was a concern for them. They were also interested in making some updates to the home. We were able to send our renovation team to evaluate the home, make recommendations for the repairs and provide an estimate. This gave our client the leverage they needed to go back and renegotiate a better sales price with the seller. Our client didn’t have to call a roofer, framer, painter etc… to find out how much the repairs were going to cost. Our team provided them with the information they needed within 24 hours. After closing we started on their project and completed all the work they had requested. Our goal is to serve our clients with excellence and make their buying, selling or renovating experience as stress free as possible.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
First of all, I have to say that God has blessed me in more ways than I can count! I have a wonderful family! My wife, Barbara has been a constant voice of support and encouragement for the past 30 years. Although she has her own successful career in the medical field, she makes time to stay involved in our business by creating design plans for all of our flip projects. My son, Steven and daughter Alexandra have spent many an hour as children at our office and as teenagers they worked in several areas of our company. Steven, now serves as our Project Manager and takes care of the day to day management with each project. Alexandra went the education route, she is a 2nd Grade Teacher and is about to graduate this spring with her Master’s in Education. I’ve been blessed to have many people come into my life and have an influence on who I am today, however I have to give all the credit to my parents and my aunts and uncles. They were the kindest, most respectful and hardworking people I have ever known. They set a great example for the younger generation in our family.
